2009 19 29. East High Bears - 2010-02-17 11:19:53 East High students learn their agriculture curriculum covers every bloomin’ thing Body Students at East High’s Agriculture Science II took part working at hands-on projects in floral arranging and design in honor of Valentine’s Day. One of the hottest curriculums in the country today, agriculture opens students up to many green (and profitable) career possibilities. After instruction in the art of floral arrangement, students designed and assembled a bud vase arrangement using carnations, baby’s breath and leather leaf. Afterwards, they took it home to keep or give away just in time for a Valentine’s Day celebration. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, florists earn from $23,200 to $25,160 annually. East High School’s agriculture program is coordinated through Manual Career Technical Center. Students also receive help with career planning, postsecondary preparation, and internships while attending East High School. |

In September, students of Cheryl T. Madrigal watched a speech by the president and wrote a personal reflection that required them to follow the writing process. The final copies of their hard work were mailed to the White House. On Feb. 9, a package arrived at East High complete with the White House seal. Inside was a letter, complete with the president’s handwritten signature, to the students. Also included were an 8-by-10 inch autographed picture of President Obama, and a smaller card of their dog, Bo, with his pedigree info on the back. “The students were in shock and many actually believed I had forged the whole thing. It was difficult for them to believe that the President of the United States actually thought enough of them to respond,” said Madrigal. “Each student received a copy of the letter. It was a true word of encouragement delivered at the right time.” |

Mario was born May 12, 1946, in Kansas City, MO, to Bill and Margaret (Kaminsky) Mandina. Mario spent his entire life in the Kansas City area and was proud of his upbringing in the North End and of his Sicilian roots. Mario highly respected his immigrant ancestors who came to this country with so little, yet built strong families and communities - the building blocks of his own faith, family and love of country. He graduated East High, went on to UMKC, graduated UMKC Law School in 1973 and completed his LLM there three years later. Mario enlisted and proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970. Mario was predeceased by his parents, his brother Joseph, and his first wife Sybille. Mario’s wish for a large family was achieved through the addition of his stepchildren and their children. Mario spent many years practicing law in Kansas City and Independence and made many friendships in the legal profession throughout his career. He was a man of high integrity and compassion. His word was his oath. Besides his faith, family, and love of country, Mario was dedicated to the Culture of Life. He would not let anything interfere with his dedication to the Pro-Life cause. He was active with Missouri Right to Life, and on its board for many, many years. He chaired the Eastern Jackson County Chapter for 15 years. He was instrumental in planning and facilitating the Life Chain each fall in Kansas City and Blue Springs. He had been on the Boards of Directors for the Community of the Good Shepherd and also Immaculotta Manor, homes for the developmentally challenged members of society. He volunteered his time and energy by taking the CGS men to ball games, the circus, fishing trips, and barbecues in his own backyard. Mario was founder of Lawyers for Life Kansas City Chapter, as well as being one of the nine founding members of the National Lawyers Association, a national bar association which honors the Declaration of Independence and the sanctity of life. He was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Fr. Fidelis Council #6506, a lector at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, a staunch Roman Catholic, and a fighter for those who could not fight for themselves. Mario was the force behind the start up of the St. Joseph Table at St. Robert Bellarmine in 1993 (all profits benefit those in need). Mario received many awards and recognition plaques during his life and service, two of the most recent awards were The St. Thomas More Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Kansas City (the first recipient), and the Joe Palermo Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to Missouri Right to Life. While proud of recognition for his accomplishments, his greatest rewards came from doing the right thing, having a peaceful family life, and sharing joyous occasions together with family and friends. I've done several events with Marlin McQueen & appreciate his help with my teams.
Check out my website & let my old buddies know so they can check it out to see if I can help their families in any way.

2006 02 01 Wednesday 1965 Kratschmer, Eric eKrats@earthlink.net I can't remember the last reunion I was able to attend, but I think it might have been the 20-years reunion, 1985. Or maybe the one in 1979. Either way, I remember I still had hair and my beard was dark. I don't know that I will be able to attend in September, but I still get back to the mid-West occassionally so maybe I can work out the timing. Regardless, please post my contact information in the Class of 1965. If I can attend I will see if I can talk my father and my two uncles into attending as well: Robert (father) 1930, Frank 1933, Norman 1937. I will also pass the reunion info on to my brother and sister, Randy and Robin 1968. Congratulations on the website; a nice job of presenting a great amount of information. I know it is not easy to put all that together. I still have my Eastonians somewhere in the attic, but it has been years since I last saw them. What fun to see some of the old photos, particularly the one of the 1965 track team. I have a box, somewhere, with a lot of pictures taken around East High School when I was in Mr.Pruett's photography class. If I can find them (don't hold your breath) I will scan some and send them to you. Speaking of photos, I think the bear you are trying to identify on the http://www.eastbears.org/new.html page under "Saturday, January 29, 2005" may be the kodiak bear in the Kansas City Museum on Gladstone Blvd. Thanks to you for all the effort.

2005 06 02 Thursday 1961 Brummet, Carol Morris carol.morris@us.nestle.com When looking at the pictures of the reunion committee, you left out the class of 1961 completely. That would be Vic weiler and Carol Brummet and Ralph Beckett. Since we were instrumental in getting this whole mult class reunion started I think our pictures should be included. Also you left our Chris lebioda from 1962. "Editor's note: They are left out because I only have yearbooks from 1962-1970 so if Carol wants to provide them, then that would be nice, and that would help us a lot." http://www.eastbears.org/committee.html http://www.eastbears.org/1961.html |

2005 04 09 Saturday 1975 Vicki (Jones) Gunn mailto:fvg51025@msn.com Well, I saw my first e-mail on this sight so I might as well let you know what we have planned for our 30th! First of all, whoever reads this, please give me your e-mail address to up-date our mailing list and please pass on this website to others from our class that you keep in touch with. This is always the toughest part, tracking down you all!!.
On Friday, August 12, 2005, we will get together at Tanner's in Lee's Summit. Ron Riggs owns the establishment and willingly agreed to let us hang out there. And, from what I hear a lot of you frequent Tanner's so why not invite everyone else!
On Saturday, August 13, 2005, we are having a family picnic. Some of you are "grandparents"!! so load up the family and bring them with you. All are welcome.
The picnic will be at Baumgardner Park in Blue Springs (next to Centennial Pool) and if you are not familiar with the location, directions will come later. We will have a catered picnic (yet to be determined), a juke-box, loaded with all the favorites from the 70's, various sport activities, along with swimming next door for the kids that would like to. A photographer will be on sight to do a memory book which you can order at that time. My e-mail address is fvg51025@msn.com and my phone number is 816-228-3155. Karla (Albertson) Grimes phone number is 816-679-2071.
I believe this is all the info I can pass on for now. We will be having another reunion meeting in a month or so. I will be glad to post the date for any interested in joining our meeting you are more than welcome to come.
Thanks, Vicki |
